The women’s soccer team, coming off the team’s first national championship in program history, kicked off another season on the first day of classes, Sept. 4th. They defeated Burlington County College 4-1 and are currently 4-1 on the season.
The team returns seven sophomores from their championship run a year ago, and have eight freshman on the team. Head coach Katie Miller, who is in her fourth year in that role, said that the team got along right away.
“The group meshed together very easily and seamlessly right from the beginning,” Miller said. “We have been practicing since early August just as a team until we had our first scrimmage and it took a little bit but everyone is now used to each other.”
Coming off a National Championship means that the competition is going to be tougher this year. It is also motivation for the players to work harder in hopes of a repeat.
“As far as recruiting, I think it stayed the same as it has been the last few years with incoming recruits,” Miller said. “I just think it pushed a lot of the incoming recruits to work harder during the pre-season because of the success we had last year.”
Headlining the sophomores is forward Caroline Duerr (Brielle, NJ / Manasquan High School) who scored seven goals through the team’s first two games. She was named GSAC (Garden State Athletic Conference) player of the week as well as the NJCAA Division III player of the week for the first week of the season. Also returning are midfielder Meghan Bradley (Middletown, NJ / Mater Dei Prep,) midfielder Raquel Rodriguez (Red Bank, NJ / Red Bank Regional High School,) midfielder/forward Nicole Rodriguez (Millstone, NJ / Union High School,) midfielder Brooke Tartis (Neptune, NJ / Neptune High School,) and defenders Ali Maddock (Atlantic Highlands, NJ / Henry Hudson Regional High School,) and Amanda Anastasia (Middletown, NJ / Middletown High School South.)
The freshman group include goalkeeper Marti Stewart (Marlboro, NJ / Marlboro High School,) midfielder Viktoria Odell (Little Silver, NJ / Red Band Regional High School,) defender Alexandria Montefinese (Eatontown, NJ / Monmouth Regional High School,) forward Brianna Penix (Ocean, NJ / Ocean Township High School,) midfielder Kimberly D’Ermilio (Old Bridge, NJ / Old Bridge High School,) defender Meredith Parleman (Middletown, NJ / Middletown High School North,) midfielder Ashley Cafarella (Old Bridge, NJ / Old Bridge High School,) and midfielder/forward Kelly Tompkins (West Long Branch, NJ / Shore Regional High School.)
